Okay, so here goes nothing—was thinking about 2021’s “Lost in Random” the other day. Maybe because I stumbled across it in some dark corner of my mind. It wasn’t exactly what you’d call a roguelike, right? But the folks behind it thought, “Hey, what if this bonkers world and dice games got mashed up with some fast-action, combat-stuff?” Why did they think that? Dunno, but I guess it kind of clicked.
So I had this chat—well, not me, but this Martin Storm guy did—talking to Polygon. He’s, like, the mastermind behind this whole new twist on “Lost in Random,” which they’re calling “The Eternal Die.” I mean, picture it. They’re spinning a yarn off the original, with you as Queen Aleksandra. Remember her? Probably not, but she’s the baddie from the first round. Aleks, with her talking die buddy, Fortune, is trying to bail out of some wild artifact trap. Or, something like that.
Storm kind of spelled it out, you know. Said they started real small—the size you’d laugh at if you sneezed too hard—planning this roguelite deal in the “Lost in Random” universe. Lots more fighting. Less dilly-dally.
So this time around, you’re not just wandering through the Kingdom of Random like Even did. Nah, think “Hades.” Fast-paced, hard as heck. Punchy story moments pop up when you’ve beaten a big boss or sucked at the game. I think Storm mentioned loving what Supergiant Games did with “Hades.” It’s like, they made these crazy twists work with story and gameplay, and Storm’s all about giving them props for that.
Oh, and now there’s Stormteller Games, which is a whole different ballgame from the first dev team, though half of them stuck around. So there’s a bit of magic sprinkled in, keeping it strange and kooky like we remember. I guess, to them, staying connected to “Lost in Random” must’ve felt like slipping on a pair of cozy shoes they’d worn forever, you know?
What’s next? Storm’s lips were pretty much zipped. Just some hints about new stuff getting added to “The Eternal Die” down the line. No clue what or when—classic suspense move.
