Bungie Reveals New Details on Its Extraction FPS Game – PlayStation.Blog

Over the weekend, Bungie finally gave fans a peek into the gameplay of their much-anticipated sci-fi title, Marathon. Known for their phenomenal first-person shooting mechanics and ever-evolving gameplay, Bungie is now steering into the extraction-shooter territory, with the game set to release on September 23. The concept of Marathon is straightforward yet thrilling: equip your Runner with powerful gear, engage in battles with other players to gather valuable loot, and make a daring escape with your treasure.

I had the chance to sit down with Marathon’s Game Director, Joe Ziegler, shortly after this exciting reveal. We delved into numerous facets of the game, including how Bungie is embracing this new genre, harnessing the capabilities of the PS5, and the striking art direction they’ve opted for.

Tim Turi: Congrats on the big debut of Marathon’s gameplay! How’s the team feeling after unveiling it to everyone?

Joe Ziegler: It’s incredibly thrilling. I’ve been using the term "nerve-cited" a lot lately. We’ve poured years of passion into this project, engaging with our audience throughout. It’s about creating a fun and visually stunning experience. Now, having actual players try it out is exhilarating. We aim to dazzle and entertain in unique ways, though it is a bit nerve-racking. We’re eager to see if our decisions resonate with players as planned.

Tim Turi: Did the development bring any particular moments that highlighted the game’s potential to the Bungie team?

Joe Ziegler: Indeed, many such moments were entirely unexpected. In Marathon, you’re exploring a mystifying world brimming with dangers at every corner. You might bump into fierce foes from the United Earth Space Council (UESC) just around a bend, or bullets might zing past your ears from a rival crew. Such moments, where you barely escape or surprise yourself with a comeback, create unforgettable, heart-pounding memories.

Tim Turi: How did the name "Marathon" come about?

Joe Ziegler: The original game in 1994 named the colony ship, "Marathon," which the UESC launched to establish a colony in a system called Tau Ceti. This enormous ship was built into an asteroid-like moon, signifying the long-haul, 500-year journey—a true ‘marathon’ of travel. We’re sticking with the "Marathon" moniker for this new installment to honor its legacy, reinterpreting some classic elements in a contemporary setting that we hope longtime fans will appreciate.

Tim Turi: Bungie is renowned for its impeccable gunplay. How are you balancing that legacy with Marathon’s unique FPS style?

Joe Ziegler: It largely revolves around the nature of survival games, where you’re always managing resources and adapting to situations. We’ve used Bungie’s familiar, action-packed gameplay and added a survival twist. For instance, health doesn’t auto-regenerate fast; instead, players must use consumables to heal. This setup requires thoughtful decisions about when to engage in combat or retreat, emphasizing the resources you’re managing.

Tim Turi: Any words for players intrigued by extraction shooters but hesitant about the risk?

Joe Ziegler: Marathon is indeed challenging, but incredibly gratifying. As you master the game, you’ll develop unparalleled survival skills. It’s designed to feel natural on controllers, eliminating the usual PC-specific nuances. This allows players to concentrate on honing the skills needed for memorable in-game moments.

Tim Turi: With players investing in valuable loadouts in matches, what can you tell us about progression?

Joe Ziegler: We aim to reward players for their game time. Progress is tied to experience, like leveling a runner per season, and earning upgrades from factions that enhance character stats—more stamina, faster looting, etc. Plus, with in-game currency, you’ll access numerous enhancements via the Black Market. This means your options expand the more you play.

Tim Turi: How does Marathon leverage the PS5’s capabilities?

Joe Ziegler: We have haptic feedback for DualSense controllers, adding tactile feedback during intense gunfights. The Tempest 3D Audio engine offers immersive soundscapes. Beyond audio, the PS5’s rendering tech, especially with the PS5 Pro’s PSSR, is something else. We’re excited for players to see these enhancements in action.

Tim Turi: Marathon’s art style stands out distinctly. What makes it unique?

Joe Ziegler: Our visuals draw from graphic and modern product designs, creating a bold, somewhat enigmatic look. The combination of striking graphics and sci-fi elements against natural backdrops creates a vivid contrast. This artistic choice complements the game’s theme of paranoia and discovery, luring players deeper into its mysteries.

Tim Turi: Any final thoughts you’d like to share with PlayStation users following this reveal?

Joe Ziegler: If you’re into survival adventures or keen on testing your skills against others, Marathon should be on your radar. We’ve ensured it plays smoothly across platforms, but the PlayStation community in particular will find much to love. We’re eager for them to dive in, discover the joy we’ve packed into Marathon, and showcase their prowess.

Mark your calendars—Marathon hits PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S on September 23.
