Doom: The Dark Ages, man, it’s a wild ride, you know? Got all this great gameplay stuff going on. Like, you’re in there with a shield parry, which is just a killer addition for an FPS. And the guns, oh boy — classic shotgun is a forever fave. Just, everything about it screams my jam. But then, wham, you’re piloting a giant mech or flying on a dragon-thingy with, like, neon wings. What? Just doesn’t sit right, honestly. They’re cool but also kinda out of place when you think about all the parry and FPS action that’s supposed to be the main thing.
So, driving the Atlan — this massive Gundam-like mech, right? — reminds me of playing Pacific Rim but not quite as cool. It’s smashing stuff, but mostly you’re just pounding with fists and, sometimes, throwing in a stomp. No chainsaw shield? Seriously! Like, why not mix in some Slayer’s parrying here? Instead, it’s more of a, uh, gentle scoot to dodge attacks. Where’s the boom?
Then sometimes, the Atlan grabs this colossal gun, and man, that’s when things get real. Demons go boom, fitting right in with Doom vibes. But ammo that charges with perfect dodges? Like, why? Makes no sense whatsoever. And then poof, the gun’s gone after you clear the area. Every. Single. Time. Come on, just let me blast more demon face!
Yeah, those mech parts, kinda barebones — solid ideas but execution? Not quite. And dragons? Don’t get me started.
Dragon segments, they just baffled me. Riding a dragon with laser wings should be… epic! But mostly it’s just… strafe, wait, dodge. Energy builds up for guns by dodging, and turrets as enemies? Come on! Who thought that was fun? Playing a mecha-dragon shouldn’t feel like a chore, you know?
Did have a blast when the dragon darts through levels shooting down demon planes. Kinda space shooter-like, all stripped down. Would’ve loved more focus there, minus the dodges. That stuff was gold, buried under all that waiting.
Doom: The Dark Ages nails so much. Tech-medieval vibes? Yes, please. Weapons rock, especially that chainsaw shield — just loads of fun. Just makes you notice the Atlan and dragon stuff more. Good ideas, sure, but odd mechanical choices left ‘em hanging. Maybe next time, if we get dragons again, they’ll nail that Doom Slayer-level excitement. Fingers crossed, right?
