YouTuber Restore Technique has recently showcased an incredibly detailed 27-minute video highlighting his custom project to transform a PlayStation 4 into a handheld device. By utilizing a 3D-printed custom shell, bespoke PCBs, a 7-inch screen, and the PlayStation 4 Slim’s motherboard, he crafted a genuine portable PlayStation 4, measuring 249 x 156 x 49.2mm and weighing 1.7 kg. Some might argue that compared to the streaming-only PlayStation Portal, this handheld version is a much more fitting successor to the PlayStation Vita.
In the video, Restore Technique elaborates on how his PlayStation 4 portable creation stands out from other handheld console mods, which often use modified Nintendo consoles like the GameCube and Wii. Given the capabilities of PS4 and similar PC hardware from its era, this project is ambitious and adventurous. What’s more, the PS4 Slim used by Restore Technique features a reengineered design for lower power, which facilitated achieving the desired thermal and power (TDP) balance for creating this handheld version.
The project didn’t skip on attention to detail. Restore Technique’s choice of a PS4 model with a smaller, more efficient PCB was strategic. They painstakingly removed unnecessary ports and components using sophisticated soldering techniques, including a lot of hot air, and used a Dremel rotary tool to trim down the aluminum heat spreader covering the motherboard. Additionally, a fan controller was added to help manage heat by allowing the fan speed to exceed its original limits, though there are still concerns about potential overheating.
Integrating a DualShock controller into the design was another feat, with numerous wires rerouted to accommodate the new handheld configuration. The project also required a robust battery, so Restore Technique crafted a custom 3S2P LiPo 12V 10,000 mAh battery pack. This is charged through an upgraded DC power jack, ensuring safe simultaneous charging and gameplay. To manage voltages for the 12V and 5V rails, DC buck converters were employed, crucial given that the screen runs at the lower voltage and is sensitive to overvoltage.
In terms of performance, the handheld demonstrated its prowess in gaming footage from The Last of Us, although at 86 minutes of playtime, it’s ideally used with the charger on. It’s also worth noting that due to its high wattage, this device wouldn’t be allowed on most flights.
Besides extracting the PS4 Slim’s motherboard, Restore Technique’s video details the prototyping journey for the “PS4T” shell, initially using FDM 3D printing. The final shell was crafted with resin by PCBWay, chosen for its suitability in handling the high-heat environment of a portable PS4 Slim.
Following initial assembly, some thermal and power challenges led to graphical issues and slowdowns in several games. With improvements in controller frames, electrical shielding, and heat dissipation, the handheld stabilized and performed without these graphical hitches.
