The Black Friday and holiday discounts on PSVR 2 led to a massive 42% reduction on the Horizon bundle, bringing the price down in the US from $550 to a much more appealing $350.
As was anticipated, this price drop propelled sales, but the extent of the increase was more than one would have initially predicted. During the 2024 holiday season, sales for the PSVR 2 on Amazon US skyrocketed, reaching nearly five times the peak volume seen in 2023.
It’s worth pointing out that PSVR 2 didn’t experience any significant sales spikes during the 2023 holiday period. Generally, one might think that slashing the price by 50% would lead to a 50% increase in sales. However, the relationship between price cuts and sales for the PSVR 2 proved to be much more complex.
In 2024, Sony kicked off the sale before Black Friday and extended it well beyond the holiday season, into the new year. The lengthy duration of the sale suggests a possible effort by the company to clear out inventory, potentially in preparation for a new SKU. This might include a new bundle or a redesigned, more affordable version of the headset. While some industry observers speculate that Sony might be losing confidence in the PSVR 2 and attempting a firesale before discontinuing it, we’re inclined to believe Sony will continue offering the headset. This will likely be the case until the time comes for their next console cycle, even if they choose not to heavily promote it in the meantime.
