Why do I even care about video games? Well, maybe it’s because I grew up with them? Or perhaps, they’re just fascinating little time capsules of culture. Who knows. Anyway, here we go — the latest bunch to hit the big leagues, the World Video Game Hall of Fame, as declared by the Strong National Museum of Play (yeah, it’s a mouthful). They’ve chosen four — count ’em, four — new entries: Defender from that Williams Electronics company, GoldenEye 007 by Rare, id Software’s Quake, and oh, Tamagotchi from Bandai. Remember the virtual pet craze? That thing was wild.
So yeah, they picked these from a 2025 list — yes, we’re in the future now, or something. Other names up for consideration? Let me throw some at you: Age of Empires, Angry Birds, Call of Duty 4 (oh, the nostalgia), Frogger, Golden Tee, Harvest Moon, Mattel Football, NBA 2K. Quite a lineup, huh?
But why these four? Apparently, they made big splashes in both pop culture and gaming worlds. Big shoes, big footprints, yadda yadda. The Strong folks, wouldn’t you know it, they have a checklist or something: icon status, longevity, reach around the globe, and impact. Quake, by the way, isn’t the first id Software game here. Doom got its badge in 2015. It’s like a family reunion.
The judges and curators — you know, the wise old owls of gaming — went on about why these games were groundbreaking. Defender, GoldenEye 007, Quake, Tamagotchi — each had their special oomph. Just guess what they said. I’ll wait.
Since 2015, they’ve let in 49 games. Just last year, they embraced Asteroids, Myst (my personal jam), Resident Evil, Ultima, and SimCity. Yep, these halls are bustling. And honestly, if this doesn’t make you want to fire up a console or dig out an old cartridge… well, you’re stronger than me.
