As the nostalgia-loving fans of The Elder Scrolls, including most of my coworkers, celebrate today’s surprise release of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remake, there’s a glimmer of hope for those eagerly waiting for what’s next. Todd Howard has given a nod to the future by confirming that The Elder Scrolls VI is indeed still on the agenda. Yes, you read that right—he’s promised that the team is actively working on it.
During an event loaded with exciting Oblivion Remaster news and footage, Todd Howard briefly mentioned, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.”
That’s quite a revelation. It’s the most significant update we’ve had about The Elder Scrolls VI since March 2024, back when Bethesda let slip that early versions of the game were out for testers. They even teased us a bit with clues that the game might be, well, fun—something you definitely want to hear.
Let’s rewind before that to October 2023, when an ex-Skyrim designer dropped the bombshell that we wouldn’t hear much about ES6 until six months before its release. Just a month prior, Phil Spencer had his own take, predicting the game was within a five-year release window. At the time, it sounded a bit like a long shot, but here we are, edging closer to that timeline with not much more to chew on.
In terms of Bethesda’s official updates, it’s been radio silence for quite some time. Their last concrete announcement was back in August 2023, confirming that development had begun, a good five years after the game was first announced at E3. Call me crazy, but does anyone else think they jumped the gun with that announcement?
Jokes and cynicism aside, it’s a relief to at least get a small whisper from the long-anticipated Elder Scrolls VI. When it was first unveiled, I was just a student. Now, I’m a fully-fledged adult juggling bills, questionable habits, and dating apps. Bethesda is still hailed as the best in the business for crafting first-person RPGs, so I have faith they’ll deliver something fantastic. But seriously, could we get some concept art or a little sneak peek? Remember in the movie Taken, how Liam Neeson had more clues about his daughter’s whereabouts than we have about this game’s existence?
